about

“When The Mask Comes Off” was written when the pandemic was still raging but the end was in sight. I was inspired to write it during an email correspondence with Boz Scaggs about my previous record The Art Of Conversation. I signed one of my messages to him “see you when the masks come off” and immediately thought to myself, that sounds like a song I need to write.

I eventually wrote it with my friend Michael Thurber (we have released songs together under the moniker Das Papi) who sings and plays bass on the track. His verse “I want to see each scar you’ve concealed, I want to be the one to help you get healed” furthers the same argument that I had made in “Keep It Wild”.

Although “the mask” refers to the face coverings that are still very much a part of life today, I think the song also works on a deeper level too; there is freedom in peeling off our proverbial masks and letting our most authentic selves be shown.

Musically it pays homage to the Minneapolis funk that I grew up loving, and is punctuated by Ben Flocks’ high energy saxophone.

lyrics

When the mask comes off
We’ll stay out all night long
Do all the things that we couldn’t when the mask was on

We’ll be elbow to elbow, cheek to cheek
We’ll be coming together every day of every day
They'll be no more need to wonder, no need to ask
What you’ve been hiding under the mask, mask mask

When the mask comes off
I wanna see who you’ve become
Let’s let the light in on the new you and share with everyone

I wanna see each scar you’ve concealed
I wanna be the one to help you get healed
I don’t care if you’ve been found or been lost
All I know is I can’t wait to see you with the mask off

When the mask comes off
When the mask comes off (you can take your mask off)
When the mask comes off
All I know is I just want to see you with the mask off

When the mask comes off
I’m gonna tell you how I feel
When the mask comes off
I’m gonna finally seal the deal

Then we can hit the pavement, take to the street
We'll say hallelujah to everyone we meet
When you pull back the cover and there’s nothing to hide
Then it's time to discover what you got on the other side

When the mask comes off
when the mask comes off (you can take your mask off)
when the mask comes off
All I know is I just want to see you with the mask off

When the mask comes off
when the mask comes off (you can take your mask off)
when the mask comes off
All I know is I just want to see you with the mask off

Leo Sidran Brooklyn, New York

“Vocally he suggests an amalgam of his father Ben with a hint of Donald Fagen. His fluid laidback style is reminiscent of Bob Dorough. Musically and lyrically his compositions are smart, sharp, and sparklingly original.”
