“What’s Trending” is my response to the Dave Frishberg/Bob Dorough classic “I’m Hip”. It was inspired by my 11 year old daughter, Sol, who is the ultimate trend follower. She’s always showing me some new meme, dance or internet phenomenon, and always armed with the phrase “look at this, it’s trending.”

Much like Frishberg’s hipster character who sang “I’m hip, I’m no square, I’m alert, I’m awake, I’m aware”, the protagonist of my song explains “I know things to wear, I know all the hottest shows, you can take me anywhere ‘cause I know, baby I know.”

So there is a tension that runs through both the song and the rest of the record, which professes to be up on the latest trends, but is also made up of the kinds of songs that fell out of fashion years ago. There is in fact very little about the music on this record that is really “trendy”.

Then again, the song is performed as a duet between me and Sol whose vocal style is totally contemporary, and the rhythm track borrows from the sounds of lo-fi hiphop that have come to embody so much popular funk and jazz, so although the song is a kind of commentary about the tireless phenomenon of today’s trends turning into tomorrow’s fads, on another level it embodies the very thing that it mocks.

Michael Leonhart, a brilliant musician who has explored this same territory for years, as a horn player (in Steely Dan among many others), arranger and producer, plays brass on the track.
